Services

Nothing is more important than routine examinations and preventive medicine for your pet. Remember that your pet ages at a faster rate than we do, approximately 5 to 7 years for each calendar year, depending on species and breed. This means that medical conditions can come on relatively quickly, hence the need for thorough physicals each year. Depending on the age and breed of your pet, an annual blood profile is recommended for all animals. When annual vaccines are given, your pet receives a complete physical to try and detect any potential disease before it worsens. Good histories are an important part of any physical exam, and we rely on you to provide us with as much information as possible about your pet’s normal routine. Common indicators of disease can be changes in weight, thirst, appetite, energy levels, breathing, coughing and stool character. Often times just by talking with you, we get hints about medical conditions that a physical exam might not reveal.

Preventative medicine such as annual exams and routine vaccinations is the best way to ensure your pet's long term health. From your very first appointment, we can work with you to set up a preventative health care plan for your pet. As your pet matures, we offer more frequent check-ups and geriatric screening tests to detect many illnesses early, when they are easier to manage. We also recommend routine dental exams and cleaning to prevent periodontal disease.

If your pet becomes sick, medical services are provided to diagnose and treat your companion. Surgical services are also provided utilizing safe anesthetic procedures

Reception
Our waiting room offers a warm and friendly environment where we welcome you and your pet. We have separate seating areas for dogs and cats to offer pets individual privacy while waiting. There is also a children's play area with toys and games to keep the little ones occupied.

Exam Rooms
We have four cheerfully-decorated exam rooms where your pet’s specific problems can be diagnosed and discussed. In addition to physical exams, this area is also used for minor treatments and giving medication. One of our dedicated technicians will first obtain your pet’s accurate weight and a brief history before notifying the doctor that their patient is ready. The doctor then comes in and completes the physical examination.

Pharmacy
Our Pharmacy is stocked with a wide range of medications applicable to small animal medicine. We also cary heartworm preventatives, flea control products and other supplies.

Laboratory
We can perform blood profiles, urinalysis, cytology, serologic tests (e.g. occult heartworm, feline leukemia virus, parvo), and routine parasite exams in-house.  This means the results are available to us immediately which can be very important with a severely ill patient.  We also use outside laboratory services for non-emergency laboratory tests.

Digital Radiology (X-Rays)
We have recently updated to digital radiology. During the last decade there has been a revolution in X-ray technology. Traditionally X – Rays have been recorded on photographic film and developed in a similar process used in normal photography. However recent advances in digital technology have been adapted to medical / veterinary radiography. This enables the images to be stored on computer and magnified so that subtle changes that may not be visible on conventional films can be identified.

Digital Ultrasound
Ultrasound is the same technology that is used in human medicine to look at an unborn baby.  As in human medicine, ultrasound technology has become invaluable at providing further insight into many veterinary diseases.  It is non-invasive and can be performed in most cases without sedation

Companion Therapy Laser
With the use of the therapy laser pets will receive instant relief of pain, inflammation and swelling associated with soft tissue injuries, trauma, surgery and chronic everyday disorders. A relatively new branch of medicine, the Class IV laser delivers a large amount of light energy into the pet's body. When it interacts with damaged cells, healing is accelerated and pain virtually eliminated. As our best friends age, recover from trauma or surgery, or simply need relief from everyday aches and pains, this advanced technology offers: Drug-Free, Surgery-Fee, Pain-Free Relief.

Dental Care
Our dentistry department provides comprehensive oral care for your pet. Dental care is a very important aspect of total health care for your pet. There is a statistical correlation in bad oral care and the decreased life span of dogs and cats. Also, the quality of a pet’s life is also diminished with bad oral disease.area for various dental procedures such as cleaning, polishing and extractions.

Surgical Room
By using inhalation anesthesia, continuous electronic patient monitoring, sterile surgical technique, and up-to-date procedures, we are able to offer safe and effective surgery for your pet.  We routinely perform elective procedures, such as spays and neuters, as well as non-elective procedures.

Recovery Ward
This is a dedicated ward for post-operative cases and hospitalized patients.

Boarding Facility
Boarding is available on a reservation basis and open for inspection during regular clinic hours.

G.O. D.O.G.S.
In 2005 Shaffer Animal Hospital and Canine Action, Inc. combined their resources to create G.O. D.O.G.S. A place where your canine companion can participate in "total" wellness through training and grooming in a fun, safe and stimulating environment. Located just behind Shaffer Animal Hospital, you can drop your dog off and let them get pampered in grooming or help your dog become more confident, obedient, and well adjusted by taking them to obedience training hosted by DOG WILLING Positive Dog Training Solutions.
